The voter registration exercise in Migingo island has resumed.

The exercise was halted on Tuesday after Ugandan policemen arrested Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission officials dispatched to register voters in the disputed island.

Migingo Beach Management Unit Chairman John Obunge who spoke to this writer on phone on Thursday said the over 1,000 Kenyan fishermen based at the island will now be registered.

He said the exercise resumed following intervention by senior Kenya government officials on Wednesday.

By Thursday afternoon, he said most Kenyan business people at the island had been registered.

"We have over 1,000 fishermen based here," Mr Obunge said during the interview.

"We are happy that the IEBC has been allowed to continue with its work. The officials arrested were freed and the BVR machine confiscated by Ugandan officials was handed over back to Kenyan authorities."

The IEBC officials were arrested on Tuesday as Ugandan security personnel in Migingo said the exercise would not be allowed to continue since ownership of the rocky island is still contested.

The officers arrested two of the officials and confiscated the BVR machine in their possession.

Obunge said although ownership of the island is yet to be resolved, Kenyan traders based there deserved to be registered so they can participated in the 2017 general election.

Both Kenya and Uganda claim ownership of the island and the raw that led to the deployment of Ugandan security personnel started in 2002.

The resumption of the voter registration work is a boost to Nyanza region which according to IEBC has registered an impressive new voter turnout.

Migori according to the IEBC by the end of the first week of the exercise had 9,039 new voters.

Other counties that led in the list included Nairobi County which topped with registration of 23,183 new voters followed by Siaya with 15,689, Kiambu (13,637), Kakamega (13,096) and Kisumu (12,631).
