Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has condemned the manner in which police handled Cord leaders who were arrested over hate speech.
Addressing journalists at his Kizingo office on Tuesday morning, the governor accused the government of misusing State resources in the application of public policy.
“The Jubilee Government has chosen to conduct itself in a manner that threatens national stability and undermines national cohesion. As a member of the Cord coalition, I would like to condemn the arrest of my colleagues in the strongest terms possible,” said Joho.
The governor further criticised the government over what he termed as harassment and bullying of elected public officials, noting that the move erodes the little progress the country has made in terms of nation building.
This comes after Suna east Legislature Junet Mohammed was arrested outside Nation Center on Tuesday by flying squad officers after the Inspector General gave out the directives on Monday evening.
Joho accused the police of being politically influenced by the government to undermine and harass the opposition leaders, adding that no legislature from the government side has been subjected to such treatment by the police.
Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama, Kitutu Masaba MP Timothy Bosire and Suna east Junet Mohammed on Tuesday recorded statements with the Director of Criminal Investigations over alleged hate speech.
