The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has said it is illegal to pay police officers facilitation fees to testify in court about the investigations they carry out.
The commission chairman, Johnstone Kavulundi, said testifying in court is part of the work that police officers are paid to do.
“A facilitation fee of any nature paid to a police officer will be treated as bribery,” said Kavulundi.
Chief Inspector Shem Omollo had earlier told the panel that is vetting traffic police officers at the Kenya school of Government that a fee of between 4,000 and 5,000 shillings is usually paid to the officers for them to appear in court.
Kavulundi said serious measures would be taken against officers who demand to be given the so called facilitation fee.
