In an attempt to reach out to leaders, Machakos senate aspirant Henry Kioko explained the role of oversight acknowledging that he will work with all leaders across the county.
He spoke over the weekend after meeting the executive in Mlolongo on their routine supervision. He said oversight is the crucial role of the senate in monitoring and reviewing the action of the executive.
"Through oversight role, the Senate ensures that the executive is carrying out its mandate to monitor implementation of policy and draw on experiences for future law makers," said Kioko.
To be able to execute oversight role, Henry said that the senator must cultivate a professional working relationship based on honesty and selflessness.
"Oversight is not publicly castigating the executive or a popularity contest," he added. He said it was clear that most senators have failed in their oversight role.
"They are driven by greed and appetite for corruption in castigating the governors," he said. Henry believes a senator must play a fatherly role in the county.
"Senators must be people with sound financial skills and good judgement."
He said the Senate fulfils its role as a check on government by scrutinising bills, delegated legislation, government administration, and government policy in general.
Henry also talked of the progressive role of the senate on initiating bills to improve the socioeconomic and political standards of its electorate
He says it's shameful for a senator to spend five years without a single bill yet he/she was elected to serve the electorate. For a senator to effectively serve its electorate, one must identify priority issues affecting the electorate.
"This will involve research, community orientation, needs analysis and stakeholder relations among others," he said.
