Renowned city lawyer and legal analyst Steve Ogolla has called for the suspension of South Africa from the African Union amid an outbreak of xenophobic violence in the country.
He contended that taking decisive action against the Southern African country would pile pressure on its government to take responsibility for the failure to protect the lives and properties of foreign nationals.
"The AU should act decisively and swiftly to suspend South Africa from the Union. This will increase the pressure on Pretoria to take responsibility for its failure to guarantee full protection of the lives and property of foreign nationals,"he tweeted.
His remarks come amid a public outcry over the targeting of foreign nationals with businesses and investment in South Africa by locals.
The violence has seen President Cyril Ramaphosa's government come under intense pressure to take strong action against the perpetrators of the bloody mayhem.
Among those affected by the violence are Kenyans living in South Africa.
The Kenyan government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that it is closely monitoring the development to ensure that its citizens are safe.
Media reports indicate that the violence has been caused by angry youths who don't have jobs and somehow think that foreigners are to blame for their plight.
