The farmers in Uganda now must possess the document or else face the law.

President Yoweri Museveni-led government wants the farmers to have the certificates to allow them to trace their cows. The administration argued that the move will ensure that the farmers benefit from the cows’ proceeds from the international market.

The new directive was announced in a statement issued by Uganda’s Agriculture Minister Vincent Ssempijja. The Minister said that the enforcement will take effect immediately. He noted that the international market demands countries exporting foodstuffs to Europe to be able to trace them.

‘‘They want to know where the products are coming from; they have been impounding and banning all consignments from Uganda if they find one box with issues,” he said.

The move seems to have excited Kenyans. A section of Kenyans online asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to follow suit and declare the same a requirement in Kenyan. They argued that the directive could be a reprieve to some farmers who have been lamenting over low proceeds from their farms.

Here are some of the reactions.
