Garissa Township MP Aden Duale said failure of the long rains has forced thousands of residents in the Northern region to stare at hunger and starvation.

Duale who was speaking during a meeting with the Pastoralist Parliamentary Group on Thursday said the current drought situation could get worse if nothing is done.

Duale urged both the county and national governments to come up with intervention measures that will assist the pastoralists’ communities from the current situation they are facing.

The National Assembly Leader of Majority also urged international donors to assist affected areas to ensure that the suffering brought about by the current situation is minimized.

He said there is scarcity of water, food and pasture adding that livestock have crossed inter counties and over borders to Ethiopia, Somalia, Tanzania and South Sudan in search of water and pasture.

“We ask the National, County Government and international donors to come to the aid of the people affected by the drought by providing food, water trucking and livestock off take Programme,” posted Duale on Facebook.
