We love our pets and we keep them for various reasons and as such losing them is the last thing you want.

While you may be too generous to give a treat to your dog or cat, you need to be careful what it is that you are feeding your pet since some foods have toxins which are a threat to the pets' lives.

According to Live science, recent research by two animal health researchers in Italy came up with the most common foods consumed by human beings but are poisonous to cats and dogs besides chocolate which is known by many to be unhealthy for these pets.

Cocoa based products are the most common in dogs and cats poisoning. Coffee, chocolate and anything containing caffeine is unfit for your pet.

Therefore, before letting your cat have the taste of your coffee, be informed that you may be bidding it goodbye.

The plants in the Allium genus such as onions, garlic, chives and leeks are also poisonous to cats and dogs if the accidentally ingest them.

Unfortunately, the toxins in these plants remain harmful even after being cooked or dried. Other foods which cause food poisoning to cats and dogs include alcohol, macadamia nuts, grapes and their products such as sultanas, raisins and currants used in baking.

Foods containing an artificial sweetener called xylitol was also found to be very harmful to cats and dogs.

Most are times when our pets die mysteriously and we are left asking what happened to them. Maybe you just killed your pet by feeding it with a poisonous dish but well, now be cautious next time you share your food with your pet.
