The Head of State said that the move was aimed at showing respect to the former president and elder statesman.

Uhuru's proclamation will be effected at State House, public buildings and grounds, military posts, naval stations, and all naval vessels.

"As a mark of respect for the memory of this African hero and friend of our country, by the authority vested in me as President of the Republic of Kenya, I hereby order and direct; that the flag of the Republic of Kenya shall be flown at half-mast at the State House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Republic," President Uhuru ordered

President Robert Mugabe died on Friday at the age of 95.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had earlier mourned him as a hero of the liberation struggle.

Mugabe had a checkered stint as president that included land reform policies that many contend led to economic collapse.

He was forced to step down after the country's military took charge, paving the way for former Vice President Emerson Mnangagwa to take over the reins of presidential power.

Mugabe was a close ally of President Uhuru as he was invited for Uhuru's inauguration in 2013 after a disputed presidential election.

Burial arrangements are afoot.
