Nairobi will be the host of a regional office for the global Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) after beating other African countries, Information Communications and Technology CS, Joe Mucheru has confirmed.
“We are glad to have ICANN make Nairobi its first engagement office location in Africa,” said Mucheru.
This comes after ICANN unveiled their African regional office in Nairobi on Tuesday May 25th in a colourful ceremony.
According to the Ministry of Information Communications and Technology, the pronouncement by ICANN to first-rate Kenya as its African home is a stamp of approval to Kenya’s increasing important role in the internet ecosystem.
Mucheru added that the headquarters have been long overdue and will help in deepening ICT usage in Africa and boost businesses as well as improve quality of the internet.
According to the CS, the office will see copy of the router servers based in Africa as a result ease internet interruptions. It will also lead to more domain names and web–based businesses thus generating more jobs.
Some of the countries that offered competition in hosting the global internet corporation comprised of South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt and Rwanda. Kenya emerged top due to its vibrant ICT sector.
