Mombasa governor hopefuls Hezron Awiti and Suleiman Shahbal have accused Governor Hassan Joho of playing a victim of circumstance with the aim of deflecting the attention from his poor governance.
Speaking during an interview with The Star on Wednesday, the duo urged Joho to desist from the theatrics and serve his people as the next general election draws closer.
The leaders criticised Joho for allegedly faking his arrest, adding that the governor's brand of politics is harmful.
Awiti pointed an accusing finger at his county boss saying he was trying to seek sympathy yet he has done little to transform the lives of Mombasa residents.
“Why is it always you? Prepare to explain how you have run the county since 2013, because people are struggling to point out the good,” said Awiti, as quoted by the daily.
This comes after Joho claimed that the government is planning to assassinate him, sentiments that were backed by Cord principal Raila Odinga.
However, Mombasa County commissioner Evans Achoki dismissed the claims and asked Joho to launch a formal complaint over the matter for investigations to be conducted.
