Two ODM lawmakers have vowed to mobilise their counterparts, to oppose the nomination of Advocate Wafula Chebukati, as the chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo and his Ugenya counterpart David Ochieng have opposed Chebukati's nomination by president Uhuru Kenyatta, saying he was unfit to lead the Electoral Agency.
According to the MPs, Chebukati performed poorly during interviews by the IEBC selection panel, and was beaten by Tukero Ole Kina, who the president should have nominated for vetting by the National Assembly.
They said they would oppose Chebukati's nomination when the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) presents a vetting report before parliament when MPs reconvene on January 18/19 to debate the report.
Presided Kenyatta picked Chebukati alongside six IEBC commissioner nominees, who include: Consolata Bucha, Boya Molu, Roselyn Akombe, Paul Kurgat, Margaret Mwachanya and Abdi Guliye.
Makueni senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr is also opposed to Chebukati's nomination.
Queries have been raised over the suitability of Chebukati, after he allegedly engaged in a corruption scam.
He is also seen as not a suitable candidate, given that he hails from the same region where IEBC Chief Executive Officer Ezra Chiloba hails from.
Chebukati's nomination is therefore seen as one that lacks regional balance.
