Sonko has manoeuvred his way from a Member of Parliament to Nairobi governor. 

How did Mike Sonko become a darling to Nairobians? The following are two tricks that have kept Sonko's name glued to many Nairobians:

1.Controversies 

Sonko has thrived in controversies. After winning Makadara by-elections, he endeared himself to his constituents. He became a fighter who constantly locked horns with city council demanding for exemption of his constituents from paying parking fees within Makadara constituency. 

He also made it difficult for slum lords who wanted to evict tenants, he went to court on behalf of tenants and filed a case. 

Fighting and championing for the rights of the downtrodden made him a darling to many. 

In 2011, Sonko was kicked out of the national assembly by then speaker Farah Maalim for dressing "inappropriately".He had entered Parliament wearing ear studs and sunglasses. While in Parliament Sonko was known for breaking standing orders.

As a senator, he was always spotted adorned with bling bling becoming adorable and appealing to youths.

Sonko also started Sonko rescue team that offered state-like services to Nairobians. Scornfully, he later donated them to Nairobi county government. 

These controversies saw his name growing and spreading like harmattan bush fire. 

2. Unmeasured generosity 

A flashy and flamboyant Sonko is known for his generosity to the county's downtrodden. He is popular among the slum dwellers and Sonko often mingles with them freely. He donates basic needs to afflicted families. He has also sponsored many children academically.
