Keroche bosses Tabitha Karanja and her husband Joseph Karanja have been released on a Sh10 million and Sh2 million bail respectively.
The two appeared before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi on Friday where they pleaded not guilty to tax evasion charged by their company.
“Joseph Karanja is to pay cash bail Ksh. 2million within seven days while Mrs Karanja should pay Ksh. 10million immediately, ” said Magistrate Andayi as quoted by Citizen Digital.
The two were not asked to deposit their passports since they are investors in the country.
However, the judge directed that the two should always notify the court if they want to travel so that their plans don't affect subsequent court hearings.
The Prosecution had earlier on asked the court to direct them to deposit their passports.
The Prosecution lawyer, Mr Alexander Muteti noted that the two knew of the case and they should have come prepared.
“She (Mrs. Karanja) made an appearance before KRA and as per the letter before the court, KRA went out of their way to engage them,” Alexander Muteti said as quoted by Citizen Digital.
“Consider if found guilty the sentence is of a fine double the tax evaded or to an imprisonment of ten years or both,” he added as quoted by Citizen Digital.
The two were arrested on Thursday in connection with a Sh14 billion tax evasion since 2015.
