Residents of Kangundo and its environs who wish to pierce their bodies have been advised to seek services from experts who will ensure high standards of hygiene in a bid to avoid body infections.

Speaking in her office today Kangundo level four Hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr Supa Tunje said that body piercing infections occur especially on the pierced areas due to the use of unsterilized piercing objects and jewelry.

She said earlobe piercing was common but some people pierced other places like lips, tongue, nose, eyebrows, navel and nipples with an intention of maintaining style and enhancing beauty.

Dr Tunje observed that if the pierced areas were not well taken care of they could be infected with bacterial infection and cause discomfort.

She said mouth piercing infections could cause speech, chewing or swallowing problems or swelling which can block the throat.

Hence, she emphasized on the use of mouthwash and proper rinsing mechanisms after each meal and before one retired to bed.

The doctor further cautioned that nipple piercing infections could lead to destruction of the breast tissue and limits the ability of a person to breastfeed later on in life.

She said that this piercing can be potentially serious or life-threatening if proper medical care is not observed.

The medic also warned that body piercing can lead to splitting and tearing of the skin which can cause the formation of scars around the affected areas.
