The IEBC Select Committee has defended nominees recommended to the President for appointment amid growing criticism and aspersions.
In a press statement on Tuesday, the Committee said that the allegations levelled against the nominees were never raised during the recruitment process, further noting that the process was conducted in a free and open manner.
“There have been various allegations concerning the suitability or otherwise of Mr Wafula Chebukati and Ms Consolata Nkatha Bucha Maina for appointment to the positions of chairperson and member of the IEBC, respectively," said the statement
"The panel wishes to state that these allegations were not brought to the attention of the Selection Panel by any person and were, therefore, not in the knowledge of the panel during the selection process,” the statement signed by the panel's Chair Bernadette Musundi said in part.
Wafula Chebukati, one of the nominees for the electoral body's chair has been a man under the lense, with the Opposition claiming that he did not emerge top during the interviews, and thus does not merit the position.
The names are currently before President Uhuru Kenyatta, pending appointment and subsequent vetting by the National Assembly.
