The weekly anti-IEBC protests headed by Cord have been declared illegal and police have now been ordered to arrest anyone who participates in them.
Speaking on Tuesday, Interior PS Karanja Kibicho stated that the protests are not peaceful and any person who dares to take part in the demonstrations will be arrested.
“We will arrest anyone who will come out to protest without fear because we have a responsibility to keep this country safe,” reiterated Kibicho.
He said that the government has known where the demonstrations are leading and that it will not allow them.
“I don’t think there is a peace-minded Kenyan who would leave his house with a sling and we are not going to sit and watch as damage is caused to this country. We are not going to allow these demonstrations in their current format,” said Kibicho.
The PS noted that the constitution allows for peaceful demonstrations only. He also pointed out that those security officers found using excessive force will be dealt with.
“Any police officer, who will truly be found to have acted outside the law, not by public opinion, is going to be punished,” he added.
The PS was speaking at the Wilson Airport after receiving the 11 police officers who sustained injuries in Kisumu and Siaya counties. In his company were IG Joseph Boinnet and his deputy, Samuel Arachi.
