Residents have said that the cost of internet at the available few cyber cafes is usually high and unaffordable to many.

"There are very few cyber cafes in the two estates which are very costly. You have to part with up to Sh2 per minute to access internet in the cafes while in Thika town you pay 50 cents only for the same duration of time," Kenneth Mutua, MKU student residing in Kiganjo said on Wednesday.

John Maina, a businessman in Makongeni noted that the entry of fibre optic in the estates will see more cyber cafe businesses come up and as a result price of internet go down.

"One cannot entirely rely on mobile internet alone because we also need internet in our businesses and even schools. Like for example now I am yet to file my KRA tax returns due to costly internet here. I am waiting to go to town and do it there because it is much cheaper," he said.

Francis Mwaura, a cyber cafe operator in Kamenu shopping centre attributed the high cost of internet to use of mobile modems.

"You can hardly charge internet below Sh2 if you are using a modem because you will close shop. We are, however, delighted that the fibre optics will help us lower the cost and attract more customers," he said.
