Shock gripped residents of Rangenyo village in Nyamira County after a woman dumped her one-day-old baby in a pit latrine.
The 36-year-old woman identified as Rose Obondi, allegedly wrapped the newborn in a sack at night before throwing it into the latrine.
Residents said the woman, a widow, had successfully given birth at Rangenyo Health Centre a day before she committed the crime.
"The woman had given birth to a beautiful baby girl at Rangenyo dispensary on Sunday and we wonder why she decided to throw the beautiful angel into a latrine," said Motari Nyang'au.
Mugirango West sub-location sub chief Livingston Mabuka who confirmed the incident said the woman, a mother of four girls, wanted a boy but did the unbelievable thing by throwing the newborn into the latrine.
" It is shocking that a mother can give birth to a child and decide to throw the same baby she had carried for nine months into a pit latrine and we suspect that maybe the woman was in need of a baby boy after she had early given birth to four girls a reason that might have triggered to the act," said Mabuka.
The residents later named the newborn as "Motugutwa", meaning abandoned in Abagusii community.
Mabuka took the woman and the new born baby to Nyamira Level Four Hospital for medical attention and also alerted the police regarding the incident.
