The main water source of the market dried up after the transformer that powered the generators became faulty.

Mike Okoth who runs a hotel in Maseno says he has been forced to close after failing to secure clean water.

“I have not resumed work since last week because I can’t get clean water. I hope the situation will be handled soon since I have to meet rent payments for this month and without the job going on I will be left in debt,” said Okoth.

John Macharia, a baker, said he has not been operating for the past one week.

“The water shortage has been a blow to my business which I have closed down ultimately. The available water is expensive with the vendors taking advantage of the shortage and hike prices. I hope the situation will be handled sooner though it has dragged on for long,’’ he said.

Mama Kate who sells mandazis to students said she too had to shut down her business because she needed water to make her mandazis. She too has closed down for a week.

"Without the water I can’t cook the mandazis despite the ready market," she said.
