President Uhuru Kenyatta has joined the family of the Likoni Ferry accident victims in mourning their deaths.
In a statement released to the media houses on Saturday, President Kenyatta said that he is saddened by the incident.
He assured John Wambua who lost his wife Mariam Kighenda and daughter Amanda Mutheu, that the government will stand with him during this moment of trial.
“The President regrets the unfortunate incident and assures all Kenyans that efforts are being made to ensure that a similar incident does not occur in future. Besides the ongoing revamp of ferry services, the President notes that the proposed Likoni Gate Bridge, the ongoing construction of the Dongo Kundu by-pass as well as the completion of the Samburu-Kinango-Kwale Road will help ease the pressure on sea crossing between Mombasa Island and the South Coast,” reads part of the message from State House.
The condolence message comes after the Kenya Navy and South African divers retrieved the car and bodies of the victims from the Likoni Seabed on Friday.
Uhuru also hailed the multi-agency that assisted in the retrieval of the car and bodies from the seabed. The exercise was faced with endless challenges before the breakthrough.
