The county government of Mombasa has confirmed several cases of Chikungunya fever. According to The Star, 32 out of 120 suspected cases tested positive for the diseases. Chief health officer Hadija Shikeli, through communications director Richard Chacha said that the county government is committed to fighting the diseases, which is closely related to dengue fever. The news comes after several residents raised concern over an unknown disease in the region. Chacha said that the disease, which is spread by mosquitoes, has caused fear among the local residents.The county government under the leadership of Governor Ali Hassan Joho has called upon the local residents to avoid using pawpaw leave in order to ease the pain brought about the disease. Chacha said that there is adequate medication to cater for all the affected persons following the outbreak of the disease."We have enough medicine. People should stop treating themselves with leaves. Drink too much of it will overwhelm the kidney," Chacha said, as quoted by a local daily.The disease is characterized by joint pains, nausea, body weakness, high fever, dizziness and rushes among other symptoms. The county government will be spraying and destroying places habiting the insects.
