The country does not have enough technical training colleges to train craftsmen to work in the bubbling construction industry, an educationist has said.
The Manager Gakuyo Technical Training Institute Simon Mwaura said that there is a training gap in the technical sector as people focus more on degrees undermining the technical courses.
Speaking in Thika town on Wednesday, Mwaura said that due to this deficit of skilled craftsmen, they decided to establish the college.
He also added that according to National Construction Authority (NCA), one must have a certificate from a registered institution thus offering the training.
“Many institutions have neglected the technical courses venturing more into business related courses and that is why the Gakuyo community has decided to nurture those into technical work,” said Mwaura.
According to Mwaura, some of the courses they offer are Computer Packages, Sales and Marketing, Carpentry and Joinery, Electrical Installation, Masonry and Plumbing.
Mwaura advised parents to stop pushing away their non- performing students especially the school drop outs by making them work in areas where they are not skilled.
“Soon we will start programmes that will consider the school drop outs who might have been neglected by youth polytechnics and would wish to gain skills,” said Mwaura.
