Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has unveiled his plans to construct nine stadia before he completes his second and final term in office.
In an interview with Nation Sport, Mutua, who doubles as Maendeleo Chap Chap Movement leader, said that his government has embarked on the long term project before he quits.
He said that the county government of Machakos has already set aside Sh800 million for the construction of eight new stadiums. The governor said that the stadia will be constructed in each of the sub-counties.
He noted that the stadia will host international competitions and ease the pressure on Kenyatta Stadium when they are complete.
“We wanted to construct a new stadium with resources from the national government, but I felt that that would be an avenue for corruption because I would have a minimal supervisory role so I refused to take that route,” he said.
Mutua said that he wants to construct stadia with a capacity range of between 5,000 and 20,000 people, adding that the groundbreaking is expected to take place in the next two months.
The governor also said that his government will continue with its good work before the end of his tenure in office. Mutua further asked residents to back his projects.
