Vocal Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho is set to leave office in 2022 to pave the way to a new administration.
While it is a sure deal that Joho will leave the coveted office after having served his second and last term, it is still a long puzzle for his successor that political analysts are yet to unravel.
At least 10 powerful politicians have shown their interest in succeeding Joho, and the number might increase or reduce as we approach the next general elections.
Some of the key names which might be interested in succeeding Joho include; Suleiman Shahbal who has been competing with Joho for the same seat but was defeated in both.
Hassan Omar, the former Mombasa Senator will probably try his second luck after he failed in the last general election.
Tourism CS Najib Balala might also use this opportunity to revive his political career.
Likoni MP Mishi Mboko is another key name set to surprise in Joho's succession race.
Here are two main reasons why Mishi Mboko will be a candidate to watch;
1. Likoni Constituency's population
Likoni's population has increased from 116,008 people in 2009 census results to 250,358 people in 2019, and some political analysts have listed Likoni to be among the key deciders for the next gubernatorial race
2. So far she is the only key name from Likoni
Unlike in Kisauni Consistency which also has many people in the county, 291,930, according to 2019 census results, at least three key politicians have already shown the interest of succeeding Joho, which increases chances of sharing their home yard votes.
Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo has emerged to be a serious contender due to the huge support he enjoys in Kisauni. Other politicians from Kisauni Constituency who might vie for the same are Mombasa County Deputy Governor William Kingi and former Mombasa County secretary Francis Thoya.
