Tycoon Ali Punjani has filed for anticipatory bail after police announced plans to arrest him over drug trafficking.
The businessmen filed the application on Wednesday ahead of his return into the country. He filed the application through his lawyer Jared Magolo.
Punjani had travelled to India to seek treatment last month. The tycoon underwent open-heart surgery.
His personal assistant revealed that the businessman was expected to jet back into the country on Monday last week but he did not show up.
The detectives said that he will be arrested once he is interrogated over his links with drug trafficking syndicate in different parts of the country. Outgoing Mombasa police boss Johnston Ipara said that the arrest plans are still underway.
“We will arrest him the minute he gets into the country. We want him to come and explain to us where he got all his wealth. We got a lot of cheques, title deeds and more than Sh63, 000 from his house during our crackdown,” said Ipara.
Police believe that the businessman is directly or indirectly involved in the illegal trade. Punjani owns businesses in different parts of the country.
