The national government through the Coast Development Authority (CDA) has set aside funds to save Coastal islands from climate change, more so the rising sea waters.
The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) said Coast islands including Mombasa are at risk of submerging due to rising waters in the Indian Ocean.
Speaking during the launch of the initiative in Matuga on Tuesday, CDA Director Mwanasiti Bendera said that the government had set aside Sh144 billion to combat climate change.
"As you can see, almost every part of Kenya is affected by this climate change, either too much rain or persistent drought," said Bendera.
"Moreso, we as people from the Coast are affected directly by the sea rise which is affecting the ocean's bio systems, hence affecting local residents. Thats why we have set a side this amount," she added.
She further said that CDA will work closely with the county governments of Kwale, Lamu, Mombasa and Taita Taveta which are affected by the rising sea waters.
