Renowned human rights activist Rev. Timothy Njoya has taken a swipe on religious leaders by accusing them of taking sides in political squabbles in the country.
Njoya further urged clerics to act as arbiters in controversial political matters in the country rather than showing openly where they lean.
His remarks comes few days after a section of inter-Faith Council endorsed controversial amendments of the electoral laws, a move which was opposed by SUPKEM, a group allied to Islamic faith.
“I don’t want to say they are talking nonsense but I’d say they are talking like pedestrians. They don’t know what they are saying because they are not experts in ICT,” said Njoya.
“But all the Church has to do is to offer alternative resolution mechanisms and become a credible neutral arbiter. At the moment, I don’t think the clerics are neutral,” he added.
Njoya is highly celebrated for standing against President Daniel Moi’s regime which was accused of gross violation of human rights.
