A new report released on Monday by United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) reveals that the projected number of displaced people in need of resettlement by 2017 will exceed 1.19 million.
The survey report dubbed UNHCR Projected Global and Resettlement Needs 2017, was officially released at the annual meeting in Geneva, Switzerland says that more than 1 million refugees were redistributed by the UNHCR to over 30 foreign countries in the past ten years but the growing number of people in need of safer resettlement has by far surpassed the opportunities for placement in a third party country.
The report further revealed that despite the increased resettlement quotas from several countries, expansion in international resettlement capacities and increase in submissions, the projected tally of people in need of immediate resettlement in 2017 will pass 1.19 million.
“We are witnessing resettlement taken to newer levels and that enhanced resettlement can offer an effective means of distributing the responsibilities for refugee protection,” Fillipo Grandi, the high commissioner for refugees at UNHCR said.
