A suspect linked to the murder of a mother and her daughter in law in Katani, Athi River has been shot dead.

The incident was confirmed by Athi River police commander Samuel Mukuusi who said that a police officer was also arrested.

Mukuusi was quoted by the Standard saying that detectives mounted an operation in the area on Wednesday morning and managed to kill the prime suspect after arresting the GSU officer.

He confirmed that the team of detectives from the Special Crimes Unit is pursuing a second officer linked to the killing.

Police had raised concerns over the use of AK-47 rifles by gangsters in the area yet the guns were mostly used by security agents.

However, after a ballistic test, the officers were able to arrest their colleague. The weapon used in the Saturday night killing was also recovered during the operation.

On Saturday night two people were shot dead in Katani.

Ann Katila and her daughter in law were shot by gangsters who made away with an unknown amount of cash.

Katila was opening the gate for her son who was coming from the job with his wife when the thugs struck.

The son identified as Mwangi sustained injuries and he is recuperating at Shalom community hospital.
