The body was discovered by residents, 300 meters from his station of work, with a jerrican also found next to the abandoned body.

This is the same spot where a disaffected Likoni deputy OCS shot and killed a woman alleged to have cheated on him with a soldier in April.

He was identified as Corporal David Githinji Mwangi, alias Man Gidi. He was attached to the base, which is manned by Kenya Navy, the largest base at the Coast.

Mombasa County Police Commander Johnston Ipara confirmed the incident saying the soldier was found dead on the roadside.

"There are no witnesses who have come forward to volunteer information,” he said adding that investigations had been launched.

According to military traditions, the body will be handed over to the family after independent investigations have been established.

Cases of insecurity are on the rise in the Kenyan coast. Mtongwe is not at risk to Al-Shabaab militants due to it's distance from Somalia, where the militants occupy.
