More than 400 revenue collection officers have been laid off by Homa Bay County.
According to the county boss Cyprian Awiti, this move is aimed at reducing the massive loss of revenue.
The agents were paid a commission based on the total amount each of them collected.
Awiti, who was a quest during the swearing of four chief officers at the county headquarters on Wednesday noted that the county revenue was being lost.
“There are people who collect revenue and keep the money in their pockets instead of submitting them to county bank accounts. I am disbanding services of the revenue commission agents,” Awiti said.
The governor has now ordered executive members to choose some member from their staff to act as revenue collectors in the meantime.
He directed that all revenue must be deposited in one account for accountability.
“I am directing that any cent collected from taxpayers must be deposited in one revenue account to avoid pilferage of public funds. I don’t want to hear any department keeping revenue elsewhere,” he directed.
