A private primary school in Gachuba ward may be shut down after a report by the Government Chemist indicated that samples of water in nearby rivers were polluted by what is likely to be leakage of human waste from the institution's latrines.
Presenting the report in the Nyamira County Assembly, vice chair for the Health committee Richard Mokaya said the water samples that were collected from nearby rivers were contaminated.
"Mr Speaker Sir after Gachuba residents complained of persistent diarrhoea as a committee, we took the initiative of sending water samples to the Government Chemist for research, and it was established that the water was contaminated," said Mokaya.
On his part, Gachuba MCA who also doubles up as the deputy Speaker said that he was happy that it has been established that water from nearby rivers was contaminated and further urged the Health committee to establish if indeed the school's latrines were the cause of the water contamination.
"I am very sure now that my people are going to be safe simply because now the government chemist has shown that water in that area is contaminated and i hope we will be able to reach to an ammicable solution," said Magang'i.
The county assembly speaker ordered the Health committee to spearhead thorough investigations into the cause of contamination of water so that the assembly can be able to conclude on the matter.
