Intensified search for a new University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor may have concluded, with close sources confiding in Nation that Prof Stephen Kiama has been handpicked for the prestigious job.

Kiama was among the three whose names had been forwarded to the president, through the Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha. 

Prof Kiama's appointment will be officially announced on Monday by President Uhuru Kenyatta. 

Kiama has been the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Human Resource and Administration at UoN since February 2019. He has 15 years of administrative experience both in basic and higher education.

He was also a member of the Senate and the Executive Board at the University of Nairobi between 2003 and 2016.

The new VC succeeds Prof Peter Mbithi who had held the position for over four years until July 2019, when he was sent on a compulsory leave owing to his corruption allegations. 

Since July 6, 2019, Prof Isaac Mbeche has been the acting VC at the University of Nairobi.

Prof Kiama was among the eight interviewees who faced the Public Service Commission on December 18 and among the three who had been chosen by the university council. He emerged the best followed by the Deputy VC Prof Madara Ogot and position three being Prof Patricia Mbote.
