Do you always scratch your beard from time to time? Have you ever tried seeking medical advise to establish the cause?
Though it is a harmless condition, it needs your attention.
Various factors have been linked to this condition.
Below are some of the many causes of an itchy beard as highlighted by Stacy Sampson, DO, a family physician.
1. Dry skin
Dry or cold weather are the major causing factors of dry skin. Additionally, immersing your skin in hot water could also bring about dry skin.
Some soaps and shampoos wash of natural oils from your skin, which in turn leads to dry skin making your beards to itch.
2. Ingrown hairs
If you have tight curly hair, you are more likely to develop an itch. This is because when you shave your hair, it grows back into its follicle instead of out. This causes the follicle to get inflamed and develop an itch. Ingrown hairs manifest in form of bumpy, red, itchy and sometimes painful surfaces.
3. Folliculitis
Folliculitis is the inflammation of one or more hair follicles. It occurs when the hair follicles get inflamed and the condition can be caused by parasites, fungi, viruses or bacteria.
You will only notice folliculitis after manifestation of painful and reddish color on your beards. You may also experience the feeling of tenderness or blisters.
4. Seborrheic eczema
This is a skin condition that causes the skin to be skaly, flaky and red. It is commonly known as dandruff when it occurs on the scalp. It can also affect the area around the beard especially if you have oily skin.
