Garissa leaders are now asking President Uhuru Kenyatta to declare the current drought a national disaster, following seven deaths as a result of the long drought in North eastern region.
The leaders, who included Lagdera MP Mohamed Shidiye, said the government had done little to address the situation.
The legislator spoke at a news conference with journalists, and claimed seven people had died as a result of the drought, urging the government to move fast to avoid more deaths.
According to Shidiye, the seven deaths occurred in the last one month.
"We are now at the verge where already animals have died enormously. we are in a situation where people are going to go down now, and people have died in my constituency. And it is not a story, it is a reality," said Shidiye.
"We appreciate the government has sent some few amount of foo. A whole village which has maybe 20,000 people will get 10 bags of rice. That is not good enough. There are so many mouths to feed, so we are saying, and we are not hiding, that this drought is biting and people are going to die in large numbers." he added.
