A plane carrying CS Ministry of Interior & Coordination of National Security Fred Matiang’i was on Monday forced to land in Eldoret after the weather conditions in West Pokot, where it was headed, worsened.
Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV, Matiang'i said that the government is in action following the rising death toll in West Pokot. He also said that the helicopters cannot fly to the region because of the weather conditions.
"We have been forced to land in Eldoret, as it is very difficult for the helicopters to fly into Kapenguria. The National government is committed to addressing challenges of West Pokot residents," he said
On hi part, Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa said that the government is working around the clock to ensure the victims of the landslides are rescued. He said that the government is ready to support all the victims.
"As we speak our PS’s are on the ground working with West Pokot leaders & Red Cross. We are working around the clock to ensure maximum support is given to all the affected," he said.
The death roll in the landslide tragedy has risen to 50. President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday ordered the deployment of KDF to the place.
