Political commentator and legal analyst Sam Omwenga has noted that Deputy President William Ruto is likely to defy all odds and succeed his boss President Uhuru Kenyatta in the 2022 polls.
Omwenga observed of all ten vice presidents who have ruled since the Independence, it is only Daniel Arap Moi who managed to take over power from his boss, Kenya's founding President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta in 1978.
He said the DP, just like Moi, has all that it takes to become nation's fifth head of state despite facing numerous hurdles and challenges.
"Ruto's strategy for years to ascend to the presidency has been nothing but brilliant producing astonishing results nobody expected," Omwenga wrote in his column published by the Star on Saturday.
The analyst said after Jubilee's 2013 victory, Ruto immediately started to plan on taking over power using strategies that not even his boss had clue about.
"He maximised on the opportunity to rig in as many MPs as he could in 2013 so that by the time Uhuru woke up, he had the numbers in Parliament to do anything he wanted or thwart anything the President wanted but Ruto opposed," he said.
He said in addition to having control of both the National Assembly and the Senate, the DP also managed to plant his people in crucial government organs, who will help him rise to power upon Uhuru's retirement.
"Not only did Ruto rig or sponsor enough MPs to give him the swagger with which he has been walking around but also cleverly exploited Uhuru’s lack of awareness that he planted his loyal soldiers in key parts of government. Especially in areas that matter when it comes to presidential elections," Omwenga added.
