Residents in West Nyakach Ward, Kisumu County are living in fear following an invasion of hippos in their farms.
West Nyakach MCA George Ogutu Oluoch said the hippos have multiplied and are now causing fear among people living along the rivers connecting to Lake Victoria.
Speaking during an exclusive interview in Nyakach Sub-County on Thursday, Ogutu said already one of the residents is nursing serious injuries inflicted by a hippo which attacked him while at his farm.
The MCA noted that the incident compelled him to ask for assistance from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
“One of my residents was badly injured following an attack by a hippo. KWS should look into this issue,” said Ogutu.
He also revealed that a number of residents in his ward are currently spending the entire night guarding their farms, to protect them from being destroyed by the hippos.
“Our farmers are not sleeping, they ploughed and are now spending the entire night in their farms because of hippos,” he said.
The MCA further accused KWS of failing to address the issue despite receiving calls from residents.
“Whenever we call the wildlife officers they don’t kill the hippos and that has made them multiply to a number that has surpassed that of our cows at home,” he added.
Ogutu is now asking for the national government to send the relevant bodies to the area to intervene in the matter.
