Speaking in Maua in Meru county on Sunday, the lawmaker stressed the need for the projects to be complete before President Uhuru Kenyatta's retirement in 2022.

He claimed that the region lags behind in matters development, despite being a stronghold of the Jubilee party.

He also warned that the region remains unaware of the person who will take over after Uhuru and what the region will get, and should use the current time to push for its fair share.

“We need to wake up and push for increased resources. We must compete with others who are benefiting now because the president’s term is coming to an end and we are not assured of [what we will get from] the next regime,” he said.

He observed that most projects are now being channelled elsewhere, with the region being left to suffer with among others, water shortage.

Kuria stated that while the government is building water projects worth billions in other parts, the biggest project is the Sh60 million dam in Meru county.

“The actual problem of water in the region is under-investment. We see billions invested elsewhere like Kimwarer and Arror. The biggest dam in Meru is a Sh60 million project in Buuri. This region is thoroughly disadvantaged and our people are in pain due to under-investment in water and agriculture programmes,” he added.

The remarks come only days after similar ones from Meru governor Kiraitu Murungi, who on Tuesday challenged the government to complete the many hanging projects in his county.

He made the remarks during the burial of area Senator Mithika Linturi's father Peter Linturi in Igembe South.
