Former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama now claims he paid for 15 MPs who travelled to The Hague in 2012. A host of MPs travelled the Hague in solidarity with President Uhuru Kenyatta when he was serving as Deputy Prime Minister.
Muthama, who then wanted former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka to succeed retired President Mwai Kibaki, was pushing to have Uhuru endorsing Kalonzo.
In an interview on Wednesday, Muthama said his decision to pay for the air ticket was informed by his closeness with Uhuru and Kalonzo by then.
"I was a close ally of Uhuru. I even paid air ticket for delegations of 15 MPs which went to The Hague. I cut short relationship with him because I wanted him to support Kalonzo," he said.
However, Muthama's plans did not materialise given than Uhuru went on to contest and win the presidency. Muthama and Kalonzo supported Raila Odinga both in 2013 and 2017.
With 2020 polls getting nearer, Kalonzo has already said he will support the faction which President Uhuru Kenyatta will endorse in 2022.
“I have made a resolution that I and the Kamba community are not flip-flopping and where Uhuru will be even after 2022, we will be there,” said the former vice president.
He added: “We are now engaging everybody as a free gear. But our true direction is to support Uhuru. I have not spoken to Raila of late but I know his support for Uhuru till he finishes his term has not changed.”
