The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) taskforce has proposed major constitutional amendments in its report, it has emerged.
The taskforce on Wednesday held its final formal sitting, saying that it is now ready to hand over the report to President Uhuru Kenyatta at the first available opportunity.
It has emerged that the taskforce has proposed the formation of a powerful Prime Ministerial position, and two deputies, with the president set to become a ceremonial head, should it pass.
It also proposes a parliamentary governance system where cabinet secretaries will he picked from the parliament.
In the proposed setting, the President, Deputy President, Prime Minister and his two deputies positions will be shared by five different tribes.
It says that communities not included at the top will be considered in other positions, including the cabinet, to eradicate the current situation where some feel excluded.
The Star reports that the taskforce proposed that the Prime Minister be elected by the parliament, to reduce the heavy competition heaped on the presidential seat currently.
Once in power, the Prime Minister will pick the two deputies from the parliament, in a proposal likely to cause a political showdown.
This is given that though President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga have vowed to support the outcome of the BBI taskforce, their brainchild, some forces are opposed to it.
The opposing side is led by Deputy President William Ruto, who has hinted at opposing any attempts to alter the constitution.
The taskforce now says that it hopes that the changes will play a major role in helping the nation stick together and move forward in unity.
“Having heard how urgently Kenyans seek positive and far-reaching changes, the task force believes that Kenya can use this auspicious moment to build the bonds between us that will become a strong foundation for an inclusive, fair and prosperous nation," it said in a statement.
