The new development comes after a series of changes made in the appointments of public servants. Public Service Commission (PSC) has now been given the mandate to hire personal assistants, cookers, and gardeners on behalf of the retired heads of state.

The commission has also been tasked with hiring health fitness instructors as well as housekeepers for the retired presidents among other officers.

The two leaders will enjoy the same privileges as President Uhuru Kenyatta as far as personal staff is concerned. Under the new laws, the ex-presidents will only wait for the commission to provide them with the staff.

The PSC will, however, be expected to consult the ex-commander in chief of the armed forces before making any decision in line with their staff.

“Subject to the provisions of Article 214 (4) of the Constitution, the Presidential Retirements Benefits Act, 2003 and the Retirement Benefits (Deputy President and Designated State Officers) Act, the PSC shall appoint the personal staff of the President, Deputy President and retired Presidents,” reads part of the Statement, as quoted by Daily Nation.

The two heads of state spent more than Sh100 million mark in the 2019/20 financial year in hiring personal staff.
