Governors have been handed a reprieve after senators backed the proposed Sh316.5 billion allocation to county governments.
The council of Governors had threatened to suspend operations after the senators and Members of Parliament failed to agree over the Division of Revenue 2019 Bills Stalemate.
The standoff had paralysed operations at the county levels and governor were in a state of dilemma before the latest development.
The senators said that they are ready to back the allocation of the funds to the county government for the sake of the smooth operations of the same in the long run.
Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen has confirmed the new move by the Senators.
“We have made the painful decision to advice our negotiators to agree on the Ksh.316 billion. We take solace in the fact that sometimes to win the war, one must be prepared to yield some battles,” said Murkomen, as quoted by Citizen Digital.
National Assembly had agreed on Sh316.5 billion allocation but the Senate insisted that the devolved units be given Sh335.6 billion.
Senators said that the national assembly has been adamant to back counties because they do not care.
President Uhuru Kenyatta had asked the governors to take the little they received from the National Assembly before they decided to seek legal redress over the same.
