Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria has allayed the fear that Ndakaini dam is a threat to the residents of the area after the spillover following the heavy rain.
The governor, who spoke on Tuesday, reminded the residents living within the area of the dam not to panic over their well-being. This is after the residents raised concern over their lives after the dam filled.
Governor Wa Iria has also demanded an explanation from the Ministry of Water on why the residents of the area are still suffering from water shortage when there is more than enough. It emerged that the dam can hold 70 million cubic meters of water.
On the contrary, Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC) has reminded the residents to prepare for an acute shortage of water as heavy rains pound even harder. NWSC officials told the county boss that they will continue ration the water until new lines are unveiled at the end of the day.
“Rationing of water is there to stay until new lines are built. The current demand is 790,000 cubic meters per day and it has been growing by nearly 20,000 cubic meters every year. The current lines were initially set to serve the city up to the year 2000 but the government has not upgraded the infrastructure to meet the rising demand,” NWSC officials said.
The residents have been asking the government to take action after the heavy rainfall failed to resolve the issues of water shortage once and for all.
