Igembe North Member of Parliament Maoka Maore has taken a swipe at fellow Mt Kenya politicians over their recent remarks regarding the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.

While some politicians have promised to pass the BBI taskforce suggestions, others, in a recent press conference, vowed to crush it should it propose a parliamentary system.

But Maore has criticized the remarks, pointing out that the politicians are simply making decisions good for them as individual persons and not for the sake of the country.

In an article on the Star, he says that while the group fears that the Mt Kenya region will lose its relevance should the system change to picking the executive from the Parliament, there is no need for alarm as the lawmakers involved will have the blessing from the people.

"It is clear that these press conferences, petitions, and statements dismissing BBI are not about what is good for the people or the nation as a whole. They are about personal ambition and the petty squabbles in the lead up to 2022 polls, which are hampering President Uhuru Kenyatta’s reforms," he wrote on Sunday.

The MP says that there is no need for fear as the BBI report is very likely to address the issue raised by the politicians, that the region is underrepresented in Parliament.

He is of the opinion that it will come up with extra seats for places with excessive voters.

"Simply put, PR means that the exact number of votes will be reflected in the exact number of mandates and seats in Parliament. The answer is not to cut the number of MPs. No county will lose any seat or power. The opposite is true. Counties, where MPs are not proportionate to the population, will receive extra seats," Maore further writes.

He says that the politicians should stop branding the region a vote basket for sale, adding that Mt Kenya people should be allowed to vote for or against the BBI, once it translates to a referendum question.
