There were protests in Kisumu on Monday, following the death of a Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) official who was found dumped in a forest on Saturday.
Ferdinand Ongeri, the county union deputy chair went missing after meeting with county health officials on Wednesday, last week. His body was later found dumped in Kimondi Forest in Nandi.
Led by the union secretary-general in Kisumu Maurice Opetu, the doctors threatened to down their tools until the killers of their colleague are found and subjected to the law.
He said that doctors and nurses are now living in fear, threatening that they will camp at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital until justice is served.
“Nurses and health workers cannot stand being beaten or killed by the same people they serve," said Opetu.
In response, Assistant County Commissioner John Cheruiyot said that he is working with security officials in Nandi in a bid to solve the puzzle.
He urged anyone with information that could be of help in the probe to hand it over to the police.
The Wednesday meeting was confirmed by County Health Director Dickens Onyango.
“It is sad that a healthcare provider should lose life in such a situation,” he said.
