The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has since closed the window for exchanging the notes with the new ones, claiming that the old notes were being used in illicit deals.

However, Mutura on Saturday claimed that the entire issue was about Deputy President William Ruto, over claims that he is corrupt has been keeping heaps of money at home.

"This issue was political and was targeting my friend the Deputy President on claims that he is keeping money in sacks. (Hii mambo ilifanywa kwa siasa, na ilikuwa inatarget rafiki yangu Deputy President wakisema eti ako na pesa kwa magunia)," he said on Saturday.

The Jubilee Party member made the remarks on Radio Jambo's Mazungumzo Waziwazi show, also attended by Makadara MP George Aladwa and political analyst and lawyer Brian Weke.

He noted that consequently, the government has lost Sh15 billion that was used in creating awareness, yet Sh7 billion in the old notes remains in the hands of Kenyans.

According to Mutura, it has come out as a big shame that Kenya could go to that extent just to deal with one person.

"Its a shame to target one person and we cannot continue his way. We have now lost Sh15 billion in advertisements (Ni aibu kutarget mtu mmoja, hatuwezi endelea hivi. Ona sasa tumeenda hasara ya billion 15 ya matangazo)," he added.

The DP has been under pressure to explain the source of his finances, with his critics arguing that the money he spends in charitable initiatives surpass his earnings by far.
