Residents of Kisumu on Wednesday morning woke up to the news of demolition of a section of fish eateries on Lake Victoria’s Lwang’ni beach.
The beach is famous for fish eating escapades, with locals and tourists visiting the place on a daily basis to sample the delicacy.
The demolition of the food kiosks was carried out following an order by Kenya Railways, which seeks to pave way for the expansion of the Kisumu Port.
After the demolitions, affected traders acted angrily. Here are some reactions from the traders:
“We were given an eviction notice by the Kenya Railways and not the Kisumu County Government. The county government should provide us with another space to operate from. Where do they want us to go? What should we eat?” lamented Hezekiah Okello, the chairman of Lwang’ini beach hotel owners association.
“We agree it is the handshake but Uhuru and Raila should help us. We are in a very bad situation here,” said Verah Awino, a fish trader.
“This will make most people here become thieves. The government should find how to help us as quick as possible,” said another trader, only identified as Philker.
“I have lost property worth more than Sh300, 000. I have lost a fridge, chairs, tables, fish stock and sodas. On July 12, we received a letter that ordered us to leave this place by August 12 this year,” said Lillian Okelo.
Another trader identified as Vicky claimed she lost property worth more than Sh2 million.
