Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has warned President Uhuru Kenyatta to stay alert following ODM leader Raila Odinga calls for a referendum to adopt Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) proposals.

In a tweet, the vocal lawyer said Raila's stand on the BBI report adoption indicates that he is still bitter for losing to President Kenyatta in 2013, and 2017 presidential elections.

“How does the paradox/irony of the handshake, the debate on executive PM and the referendum to change the Constitution as driven by Hon Raila escape H.E Uhuru? All these are grounded on Raila's contention that Uhuru stole his victory in 2013 and 2017. Uhuru should smell the coffee,” he tweeted.

Raila is of the view that the BBI report should be implemented through a referendum and not a parliamentary process.

According to him, a committee of experts should be formed to streamline the proposals, after which it should be taken to the people for them to decide.

"The process must be people owned, it must not be taken to Parliament. It is the people to own the document," he said as quoted by Standard.

However, a section of leaders allied to Deputy President William Ruto have insisted that a referendum is not a must, adding that the proposals can be implemented through Parliament.
